Ive been getting a heap of questions about which places to visit between Sydney and The Sunshine Coast. Originally established in the 1970s, the park offers safe haven for marine animals that have been injured or otherwise made incapable of returning to the wild, and now houses dozens of aquatic mammals and other varieties including Little Penguins, sea lions, green sea turtles, and most famously, its handful of Bottlenose Dolphins which serve as the star attraction. Coolangatta Beach is renowned for its casual culture and relaxed vibe. Easy to walk around and if you are able to buy the unlimited pass, you will be able to try everything. Beautiful coastal national park with lovely campgrounds and also a caravan park. While one parent surfs the large breaks at the point, the other can hang with younger kids on the wide sandy area of Kirra Beach. St. Thomas' Anglican Church was built by convicts in the 19th century. Treat the kids to an animal encounter or visit penguin beach to see the Little Blue Penguins, the smallest penguins in the world! The direct drive from Sydney to the Gold Coast is 526 mi (847 km), and should have a drive time of 8 hrs 21 mins in normal traffic. Beautiful, busy these days but definitely worth a visit. Do yourself a favour and take the 6km drive off the Pacific Highway (north of Coffs Harbour) through the banana plantations and into the lush green Orara East State Forest. You know what, after all these years of driving up and down the coast Ive never been there! This waterfall you are able to swim in but is very cold. You can finish everything in half a day. Beautiful views though. There is always a heap of Airbnb places in Peregian though. Tacking Point Lighthouse has been here since 1879, placing it just outside Australias top ten oldest lighthouses. Easily the most well-known of Australias unusual series of big inanimate landmarks (avocado, guitar, prawn, et al), the Big Banana has become synonymous with everything Coffs Harbour since its construction back in 1964. Of course many of these things that she couldn't bare to part will be remembered forever as they became part of arrangements in her still life paintings. Nice view for hiking/exercises. There is also a cafe here (the scones with strawberry jam are highly recommended) and a store to buy preserves, sauces, chocolate, jams, pickles and other produce, including fresh vine ripened tomatoes. The Coffs Coast is the only region in New South Wales where the mountains of the Great Dividing Range meet the Pacific Ocean. CITIES BETWEEN. If you have a little more time you could stop in Newcastle or Port Macquarie, but as were rushing to only the best places along the east coast, Id recommend getting as far north in this first day as possible, and realistically, this is Coffs Harbour. As per usual, Ill be adding to this list as I go, Im always falling in love with somewhere new. Beautiful beaches and an amazing rivermouth that is the bluest of blue, Im always amazed how stunning it is every time I drive over the bridge between the two towns. From Byron you are about 40 mins from the QLD border. The Dolphin Marine Conservation Park is the only zoological park in New South Wales where you can get up close to dolphins, and is an exciting and once-in-a-lifetime experience as a result. It has a really lovely main street with large established trees all through the centre of town. This is one of the great escape spots located just around an hour drive from Sydney.
